Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been transferred to Kamiti Maximum GK Prison for detention. The ex-county chief’s lawyer, John Khaminwa, said at 4:50pm Wednesday that he was headed to Kamiti to meet his client, who was earlier being held in custody at Gigiri Police Station.

It remains unclear why Sonko — who had earlier unsuccessfully sought to be moved to Muthaiga Police Station over alleged threat on his life — was taken to Kamiti Wednesday evening. We are seeking to find out.

Sonko, who is facing a litany of charges including Ksh10 million corruption allegation, will on Thursday, February 4 know whether he will be freed on cash bail or not. The matter will be handled by the Kiambu Law Courts.
